Carpet & Allergies

Health professionals sometimes recommend that allergy and asthma patients remove carpet from their homes. But those recommendations are generally based on faulty assumptions. In fact, clean dry, well-maintained carpet actually keeps dirt from being tracked all over and tends to trap and hold materials that would otherwise be resuspended into the breathing zone hence preventing allergies.

Three major pollutants of indoor air quality are formaldehyde which is emitted from a wide range of building products, oxides of nitrogen and oxides of sulphur both of which are by-products of combustion processes, for instance gas cookers and heaters etc.

Carpet does not contain formaldehyde or any of the other gases but carpet sampled from in-use environments having even minimal levels so far is likely to contain traces of it. This could easily be misrepresented as having been an intentional component of the carpet though these traces do not release significant amount of formaldehyde to the indoor environment.
